Common Ants in Phoenix, Arizona

Oct 3

Ants are among the most common insects found in Arizona and their sheer numbers often cause problems for homeowners. Ants are attracted to food and water, so kitchens and bathrooms are often their points of entry into homes. Once they're inside, ants can quickly become a nuisance as they travel in large numbers across countertops and floors in search of food.

There are many different species of ants found in Arizona, but some of the most common include:

 Argentine ants

* Fire ants

* Odorous ants

* Crazy ants

* Pavement ants

Argentine ants are one of the most prevalent  ant species in Phoenix, and they're known for their large colonies. They are often located in the moist area around irrigated soil next to or under buildings. They measure about 2.2 to 2.8 mm long and range from light to dark brown. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods including sweets and meats.

Fire ants are another common ant species in Arizona. They get their name from their painful sting which can cause severe reactions in some people. Fire ants are small, only measuring about 1/8 of an inch long, and either black or red in color. They are likely to nest in gardens, around yards, and roadside.

Two of the most common types found in Arizona are Southern and desert fire ants. These species are not only aggressive, but they also have nasty stings that leave painful, itchy blisters that can last for weeks.

Odorous Ants are black, small ants about 1/10 of an inch that emits a foul scent when squished. Though they do not bite or sting, they often invade homes through tight spaces and prefer warm areas with food like pantries. They mostly invade homes during rainy weather, and nest under carpets, near the heater, and water pipes.

Outdoors, odorous ants nest beneath the soil, in logs, debris, or under rocks.

Crazy Ants are approximately 2.2 to 3 mm in length with dark brown to black in color. Their leg is extremely long giving them a distinct appearance. Crazy ants get their name as when they are disturbed, they rush around looking confused. They are invasive ants that cab bite but cannot sting. Crazy ants have a wide variety of preferred food and can be a problem both indoors and outdoors.

Pavement Ants are dark brown, with a size 1/8 inch long, and have appendages lighter than the rest of their body. They have12 segmented antennae with three-segmented clubs. Pavement ants don't bite but they have the ability to sting. Pavement ants are not aggressive and prefer to avoid confrontation rather than stinging to defend themselves. Like other species, they can build their nest both indoors and outdoors.
