Are German Cockroaches Common in Boise Idaho Homes?

Sep 4

German cockroaches are quite common in Boise, Idaho homes. In fact, they are one of the most common types of cockroaches found in homes across the United States due to their small size, short life cycle, and ability for insecticide resistance. They can be distributed worldwide largely because they're able to survive anywhere there's food available.

Adult German cockroaches are about half an inch to five-eighths of an inch long. They have a light brown to tan body and two dark stripes that run from their head to their wings. Males are slender compared to females, who have a more rounded abdomen.

The nymphs are smaller versions of the adults and are dark brown in color. As they mature, they develop the two stripes on their back.

German Cockroaches Life Cycle

The life cycle of the German cockroach is rather impressive. Females live 140-280 days, while males can survive up to 90 days but only if their temperature doesn't drop below 59° F (15 Celsius). This species produces 5 -8 oothecae with 200 –250 eggs in each tube which takes 100 days for completion. This is a much higher number than most cockroaches.

How do German Cockroaches Get into Idaho House?

German cockroaches are attracted to food sources, moisture, and warmth. They are often found in kitchens and bathrooms, near dishwashers, stoves, and refrigerators. They can also be found in other areas of the home, such as basements, laundry rooms, and garages.

German cockroaches can squeeze through very small cracks and crevices to gain access to homes. Once inside, they reproduce quickly and can become a big problem in a short amount of time.

The German cockroach is mostly nocturnal, so you're unlikely to see them during the day. However, if you do see one during the daytime, it's a good indicator that there's a high population since they're only out in the open when overcrowding occurs.

How to Prevent German Cockroaches in Your Home?

To prevent German cockroaches from entering your home, it's important to seal any cracks or crevices around the exterior of your home. This includes weather-stripping around doors and windows and repairing any cracks in the foundation or walls.

It's also important to keep your home clean and free of clutter, as this provides German cockroaches with hiding places. Be sure to vacuum regularly and empty the trash often.

If you think you may have German cockroaches in your home, contact a pest control professional to have them removed. Getting rid of them on your own can be challenging and may worsen the problem.
